Barnum Community Education Classes T-shirt Quilt Another easy way to re-purpose your old t-shirts! A t-shirt quilt makes a great memory quilt, use it as a way to remember a loved one to use it to showcase a part of your or someone else’ s life… think graduation gift, etc. The first session of the class we will work on your quilt layout and preparing the t-shirts for use. The second session we will put your quilt top together and decide on backing and binding options along with quilting or tying options. Materials Needed: Sewing machine, scissors, rotary cutter, mat, and ruler (opt), coordinating thread, T-shirts (lots… at least 12), 10-15 yards of fusible light to medium weight interfacing, and 2-4 yards of a coordinating fabric. (You will eventually need batting and backing fabric, but we will decide on that as the class progresses and you decide how big your quilt is going to be.) When: Monday, Jan. 9th and Tuesday, Jan. 31 Time: 4-6pm Where: Barnum High School Cost: $20.00 Instructor: Melissa Johnson Beginning Quilting Want to learn the basics of quilting from reading a pattern and selecting fabric, to cutting your fabric and piecing, layering and quilting? Then join us for three introductory sessions. You will be making a table runner as we learn. (Some sewing may need to be done at home to complete the project fully.) Materials Needed: Sewing machine, scissors, pins, notebook and pen, (rotary cutter, mat, and ruler optional), coordinating thread, 3 coordinating fat quarters or 1/4 yard cuts for blocks (preferably one light, one medium, one dark print), and 1 yard for border, backing, and binding. Finish that Quilt: Machine Quilting with your own Machine Yes, you can machine quilt your own projects! Join us for a session of practice on your own sewing machine. We will cover “stitch in the ditch”, outline quilting, and free motion quilting. Materials Needed: Sewing machine, walking/even feed foot, darning foot suitable for your machine (it’s a good idea to bring all of the accessories that came with your machine), scissors, thread, scraps of fabric and batting scraps, pins, notebook and pen. Finish that Quilt: Border and Binding Do you have unfinished quilt projects because you are unsure of how to add borders, or the idea of binding a quilt stops you in your tracks... then, join us for a session with tips and tricks on: adding borders to increase the size of your quilt projects, how to make your own binding, and how to properly bind a quilt. Materials Needed: Sewing machine, scissors, pins, (rotary cutter, mat, and ruler optional), coordinating thread, a small project that needs to be bound, OR (2) 18” squares of fabric, (1) 18” square of batting, and a coordinating ¼ yard cut of fabric.
